Serotiny:

Fire is the catalyst for the Pine, Cypress, and Giant Sequoia cones to open and drop their seeds. Fire-mediated serotiny is the name for this process of germination which occurs when environmental activities trigger seed release. As a conifer cone need burn to drop its seeds for renewal, these cocoons hold hope for continued existence. The title question surrounds that of the earth, climate, and inevitable change. Of sacrifice, loss, rebirth, and regeneration. The wood, pulled from a home lost to fire, reminds us of our involvement in the cycle of regeneration.
